Derrick Wong is a bass player, music director, and arranger from Los Angeles, California. He has been playing bass for over 11 years and has performed with Elan Atias (former frontman of the Wailers), Rocky Dawuni, Daniel Marley, Ericka Guitron, and VJ Rosales of The Filharmonic, as well as independent artists Michael Cartwright, Marley Munroe, Celeigh Chapman, and Alex Nester. Derrick is a member of three independent bands that regularly play the L.A. indie rock circuit: Act As If, Sad Robot, and Boroughs. In 2010, Derrick received a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. There, he studied under jazz heavyweights Lincoln Goines, Lenny Stallworth, and Eli Marcus. In Los Angeles, he also studied under David Enos and Jerry Watts Jr., among many others.
Derrick’s music career has taken him all over the United States and beyond – everywhere from Nashville to New York, Austin to Austria. Derrick is known for his unparalleled reliability and versatile style. He seamlessly transitions from jazz to reggae to rock and blues. Derrick draws inspiration from the vibrant and ever-growing community of independent artists who make their living off their craft, and thrives off the evolving and unpredictable nature of the music industry.
